8 Base stations to cover 10x10 meters ! different answers !

Recommended Posts

Hello there,

We have a project a VR experience, involvoing 4 people. A free roam expérience.

All is fine with  4 Bases statiosn 2.0, but we need more to cover the surface. As steamVR support up to 16 :)

But apprently, steamvr can detect bases station, but it is not working ! see this vidéo :

Answer from Valve Software" :

"SteamVR Tracking 2.0 only supports 4 bases per session. More than 4 can be found, but a device can only track from up to 4. It will not automatically switch to other bases during a session."

Answer from Steam Support :

"It should be possible to use 8 base stations to get very good coverage in a 10m by 10m area. The primary benefit of using more than 2 base stations is more points of reference and less chance of tracking issues due to occlusion, and depending upon your play area, you may be able to use less."

It should...but it does not..so before szwitching to an other tracking option, is there something in the pipeline to suport mores than 4 Bases Station ?

If someone have a idea :)

In advance thank you, best regards from France

The first answer is correct currently: "SteamVR Tracking 2.0 only supports 4 bases per session. More than 4 can be found, but a device can only track from up to 4. It will not automatically switch to other bases during a session."

An instance of SteamVR can only accept tracking data from no more than 4 stations, specifically the first four it sees in a session.

I am sending you an email, be on the lookout for it.

Hi,

Is there any update on this? Is it an expected feature (support for more than 4 base stations)?

I really wish communications on this subject were more clear. Some of us enterprise developers like to plan ahead (we're funny this way) and knowing the roadmap is kinda useful.

Thanks!

@Niv Fisher - Valve has not publicly announced plans to add support for more than 4 stations per SteamVR instance - it is not currently on any public facing roadmaps. Currently, Valve's official stance (and thus our official stance) is that you can currently support upto 4 stations per a single SteamVR instance. They've hinted that it's something they're experimenting with in a few posts and comments but have never actually come out and said it's a targeted roadmap feature. If Valve were to add this to their release timeline, news of such would come initially from Valve rather than HTC as they manage the SteamVR hardware tech stack. You can try reaching out to Valve through your deverel channels there but they're usually pretty secretive.
